accroma labtec Ltd.
Robot for the automated sample preparation of solid samples
The chemical analysis of solid samples requires sample preparation, which is almost exclusively done manually in laboratories. This is cost-intensive, inefficient, error-prone and difficult to document. Through our innovation, we are the only company in the world to make it possible to automate the entire process without cross contamination. With our series product "accroma 2.0", we are making a major contribution to the digitalised and automated Laboratory 4.0.

Making tissue heal
Insufficient wound healing is one of the primary and most dreaded global health problems. At ETH Zurich and Empa, we have developed metal oxide nanoparticles that stimulate the regeneration of injured tissue. We currently use our unique technology to treat seroma formation, one of the most common surgical complications that is especially prevalent in breast cancer surgery. Eventually, we will establish a wound healing platform technology that can be used to treat a broad spectrum of conditions, such as venous ulcers.

Spearheading cryo-EM near absolute Zero
Our company, condenZero, is a spin-off from the physics department at the University of Zurich. We develop scientific sample holders, operating near absolute zero (ca. -270°C). In our startup phase, we focus on launching a new cooling technology into the cryo-electron microscopy market. The technology is capable to hold cryogenic temperatures for up to 24 hours, instead of only 15 min with current solutions. This way, we enable cryo-EM researchers to boost scientific progress in the fields of life sciences and materials research. Our product addresses highly desired specifications from a growing market with a potential of $3-4bn.

AI-supported digital assistant for optimising medication
epha.health is able to predict the risk for patients with complex therapies. To achieve this, an artificial intelligence was trained with results from studies from the entire scientific literature. Based on these predictions, better therapy alternatives can be calculated for the first time, helping doctors and pharmacists worldwide to improve medication and prevent complications. This brings the goal of preventing avoidable side effects due to medication errors within reach for the first time.

Restoring bones’ strength before they break
The consequences of hip fractures are often dramatic: 20% of patients die within the first year and 50% never walk unassisted again. Doctors lack fast-acting solutions to strengthen osteoporotic hip bones.
Flowbone developed a bioactive gel that can be injected under local anaesthesia and restores the strength of bones in just a few weeks. This solution protects patients from devastating hip fractures and helps maintain their mobility and independence.

Probability-Based Risk Assessment for Car Insurance
Kasko2go is an InsurTech start-up based in Switzerland and focused on the car insurance industry. Unlike existing telematics, we dive deep into the processing of big data and AI technology and assess driving habits using solely parameters that have a proven correlation to accident rates, and assign drivers with a probability of being involved in an accident. This information serves a real purpose for actuaries and underwriters. We sell this information to the insurers in the form of risk reports to enable them to better understand their risk and portfolios.

Nemosia
The missing piece of puzzle in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases!
We want to raise public awareness of neurological diseases and promote a culture where it is normal and safe to examine the brain regularly, even when there are no visible symptoms. Over the past two decades, hundreds of billions of dollars have been invested worldwide to find a cure. Yet progress has only been made at the symptom level. Nemosia is developing highly selective and sensitive medical tracers for PET imaging for early detection of neurodegenerative diseases; not only to find a treatment, but also to empower everyone to become active.

Giving solar cells a second life
According to Bloomberg, 60 million tonnes of PV e-waste will be generated by 2050, representing 10% of the world's e-waste. Currently, there is no way to continuously monitor the condition of a single solar module, forcing solar developers to discard underperforming modules and replace them with new ones. We have developed a smart module-level IoT sensor that detects sick modules at an early stage and suggests measures for repair and reuse.

Symbergy
Currently, the largest fishfarm in Switzerland is ramping up their production that uses warm drainage water from said tunnel. The wastewater from Basis 57 contains valuable nutrients, which is where Symbergy comes in. By using bio-filters, we make those nutrients accessible to plants. We want to create a product portfolio consisting of herbs, salads and vegetables, which are not locally produced, but imported. Therefore, we increase local supply and reduce emission-heavy transport from abroad. We can grow these plants year-round without the addition of any chemicals or harmful substances. Additionally, the energy needed can be sustainably sourced and the water may be treated and returned to nature.
